The Graphics-Inclusive Literary Genres: Doodle Art, Manga, Graphic Novel

A blog by Earl Stefen E. Sistona, XII – Hawking.

I finally had the time to share with you all my insights to these three literary genres– Doodle Art, Manga, Graphic Novel. Out from the literary genres introduced in the 21st century, these are the three that I want to talk about. To be quite frank, I am not the best person to share about the mentioned literary genres. I’m sure there are lots of people who are more in the right position to convey their insights regarding these three. But I assure you, the things that I would convey would be as of important an relevant as any others.

The graphics-inclusive literary genres. As their names suggests, they integrate graphical representations into their works to further put emphasis on the events or scenarios that happened in the story. Like all types of genres, they have certain differences that sets them apart from the other literary genres. It might be from compaction of a story like that of flash fictions to the full reliance to technology itself like in hyperpoetry!

Doodle Fiction

Doodle fiction, according to Paulene Galimba, is a literary presentation where the author of the book incorporates doodle writing or cartoonish drawings, and handwritten graphics in place of traditional font. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney, for example. It’s a book that I love to read when I was still little and the book that I get excited over whenever I get a new Wimpy Kid book. If you’ve read the book, you can see that it has features that are absent in other literary genres. The mimicry of the design of paper, the stylized font that mirrors that of handwritten ones, and doodles! These features of the book make us feel that we actually are reading a diary of somebody. And while not all books focus on that specific intention, you can get a sense of feeling that these types of literary genres give us a close-up look in how people express themselves through unconventional styles of writing and integration of unconventional elements.

Graphic Novel

We usually think of “novels” as lengthy, text-exclusive books but in the case of graphic novels, it includes visual illustrations. These are narratives which a story is conveyed through the use of comic formats. It refers to works and thematically linked short stories as well as fictional stories across a number of genres. Each of the illustrations and text are isolated in panels of varying sizes. I personally never read a graphic novel as I’m more of a manga guy, but from what I heard from my classmates back in 10th grade, graphic novels are worth reading and immersing into. It may be because these books are very entertaining and easy to read because of the mix of text and the presence of visual content. Maybe when I get my hands on a graphic novel, I’ll try to read it (of course when I have the time).

Manga

If you’re a fan of anime like me, then you are most likely be familiar with what a manga is. Manga refers to comic books created and published in Japan. It has very unique features that are absent or different in western comic books. Instead of reading it from left to right like how most of us are used to, you start reading the comic from right to left. Most manga are also monochromatic in color, so for those fans who can’t read without color, this might not be for you. Like graphic novels, the stories are enclosed in squares along with the drawings. This is closely similar to graphic novel, the difference lies in the style of art used. According to Linna C., manga follows a more flowy style of art compared to graphic novels, which are more cartoonish and rough. Since the origins of both genres are places unrelated to one another, it’s no surprise that the art style upheld by the artists also differ.
